How home EV charging works
A typical home charger delivers around 7kW, roughly three times faster than charging from a standard three-pin socket. Most drivers plug in when they get home and let the car charge overnight. With a smart charger you can schedule charging for off-peak hours, which can make a big difference to running costs on an EV tariff.
Nearly all electric cars sold in the UK use the Type 2 connector for home charging, so a standard home charger will work with your car and with any EV you buy later.
What we check before installing
Every installation starts with a proper look at your supply and where you park. Here's how the parts fit together:

- 3Cable routePlanned to be neat, protected and as short as practical.

- 5Your carType 2 connector, standard on almost every EV sold in the UK.
Many UK homes have a type of supply that needs extra earthing protection for EV charging. This is either built into the charger or provided with an earth electrode, and we'll tell you which applies to your home.
Tethered or untethered?
A tethered charger has its cable permanently attached, so you just unhook it and plug in. An untethered charger has a socket, so it looks neater and works with any cable, but you'll need to keep a cable in the car. Both charge at the same speed.
Flats, rented homes and shared parking
If you live in a flat or rent, you'll usually need permission from the freeholder or landlord, and a dedicated parking space. Government grants for renters and flat owners have been available in recent years, so check the current scheme on GOV.UK before you book.
After installation
You'll get an electrical installation certificate, and we notify your network operator about the new charger. Before we leave, we connect the charger to your app and show you how to schedule charging.
Common questions
How long does an EV charger installation take?
A standard installation is usually completed in a day. Longer cable runs or supply upgrades can take more time, and we'll tell you in advance.
Will I need to upgrade my electricity supply?
Sometimes, but load management often avoids it. If an upgrade is needed, it's arranged with your network operator, and we'll explain the process.
Do I need planning permission?
A wall-mounted charger on a house with off-street parking usually falls under permitted development, but there are exceptions, such as listed buildings. We'll check at survey.
Will the charger work with my car?
Almost certainly. UK home chargers use the Type 2 connector, which is standard on nearly all electric cars sold here.
