Why F-Gas certification matters
Air conditioning uses refrigerant gases that are controlled by law. Only certified companies can install, service or repair systems that contain them. Ask any installer for their F-Gas company certificate number before you book.
Choosing the right size of unit
An undersized unit runs flat out and never quite cools the room. An oversized one switches on and off constantly and wastes energy. As a rough guide, a 2.5kW unit suits a small or medium bedroom or home office, and a 3.5kW unit suits a larger bedroom or living room. Open-plan spaces, loft rooms and rooms with big south-facing windows usually need more.
We size every system at survey, taking into account the room size, windows, insulation, how the room is used and any heat-producing equipment.
Split systems vs portable units
Portable units are cheap to buy, but they're noisy, take up floor space and need a hose out of a window, which lets warm air back in. A fixed split system is quieter, more efficient and much more effective. Because modern split units are heat pumps, most can also heat the room efficiently in winter, producing several times more heat than the electricity they use.
What happens on installation day
- We agree the exact positions of the indoor and outdoor units with you.
- A small hole is drilled through the wall for the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
- The outdoor unit is mounted on a wall bracket or ground stand.
- The pipework is pressure tested and vacuumed to remove air and moisture before the system is opened.
- The system is commissioned, and we show you how to use the controls and the app.
Most single-room systems are installed in a day, with little mess.
Refrigerant gases and the law
Air conditioning systems contain fluorinated refrigerant gases, and the F-Gas regulations say only certified companies may install, service, repair or decommission them. Larger commercial systems also need regular leak checks, and records must be kept. If you run a business, we can take care of the checks and the paperwork.
Placement and neighbours
Outdoor units make some noise, so we position them away from bedroom windows and neighbours where possible. If you're in a flat, a listed building or a conservation area, you may need permission before installing. Leaseholders usually need the freeholder's consent too. We'll flag this at survey.
Common questions
Can air conditioning heat as well?
Most modern split systems can run in reverse to heat a room, and they do it efficiently. Many customers use them for both.
How long does installation take?
A single-room system is usually fitted in a day. Multi-room and commercial jobs are planned after a survey.
Do I need permission?
Sometimes. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas are the usual cases, and leaseholders normally need their freeholder's consent. We'll flag this at survey, and your council can confirm.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Usually on a wall bracket or the ground, as close to the indoor unit as practical. We'll agree the position with you first.
How often should it be serviced?
Once a year for most homes. Busy commercial systems may need more.
Is air conditioning expensive to run?
Modern split systems are efficient, especially compared with portable units. Running costs depend on the unit size, how many hours you use it and your electricity tariff. We'll give you a realistic picture at survey.
